Shirakawago is not a theme park, it's a town where people live. Of course it's open.

While it's not a theme park, a lot of the buildings (possibly most or all) will be closed. I looked up the Kanda House which is a popular one to enter and it is closed over the New Years holiday. If you just want to see the buildings, you can do it during New Years, but entering the traditional houses may not be possible during New Years and many of the souvenir shops/restaurants may also be closed.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I have now booked a bus tour to the place since I could not get any bus tickets. The website I looked at did not indicate whether Kanda House is closed or not so I was not aware that it is closed over the New year period. On well, I just have to accept it and see what we can do there. Cheers.

Entry to the houses can be interesting, but not essential.

Just to let everyone know that the houses were opened on the 31st Dec 2019. Shops were also opened for business. I think the only ones that are not opened are the guest houses for staying overnight.
