We plan to visit Zao in Feb 2020. We may not ski but would be taking the gondola and also interested with the Snow Monster Illumination at night.
Is there a convenient onsen area to stay besides Zao Onsen area? Appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Is there a convenient onsen area to stay besides Zao Onsen area? No, Zao Onsen is the only convenient onsen area to stay nearby. It has a wide range of good lodgings and some of Japan's best hot spring waters. Yamagata has another outstanding onsen town, Ginzan Onsen, however it is far from Zao and would not be a convenient base for seeing the snow monsters: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7975.html

Thank you for the advice.
Also, we would like to visit the Snow Monster Light Up and Sumikawa Snow Park for the Snow Monster Ride. Is the Light Up in Yamagata or Miyiga side? We intend to stay in Miyiga for 1 night.
Do you think it is worth going up to Hirosaki for the Snow Festival and Winter Cherry Viewing?
Thank you again.
