Latest visit to avoid Olympic pricing/crowds? 2020/1/4 01:31
Was hoping to visit Japan for first time in late June-early July for ~12 days. But, want to avoid Olympic pricing and crowds. Is this too late? What's the latest date to be in Japan?

Check the pricing for the hotels you want to use. There will be a definite up-tick in pricing as the hordes of Olympic officials arrive in Tokyo ahead of the opening. I saw an article that said they would begin arriving in their tens of thousands around a month before the games start and their hotel booking of some 45,000 rooms precedes the games by a few weeks.

Good suggestion. If your reference is right, sounds like we may already be too late. Thanks.

Well, late June/early July is anyway quite a bad time for traveling through Japan (except Hokkaido) due to the humid heat.
So maybe target May? Or October?

Hot/humid weather--another good reason to change plans. Thanks.

A month in advance has been normal uptick in arrivals for the past 20 years of Olympics.

Or go somewhere else not Tokyo or Kanto.

June/early July is still ok for travel with reference to heat/humidity. Later July and into August are usually the peak periods. June is actually quite a good month to travel, and easy to avoid the "rainy season".

Thanks. Seems many folks believe crowds will start 1 month in advance. Very helpful. Appreciate the added perspective re heat/humidity.
