Meat snacks in convenience/grocery stores? 2020/1/19 00:17
My wife and I are traveling to Japan next month. Her diet is pretty restrictive, and travel staples for her are meat snacks like jerky or Epic Bars. Are items like those readily available in Tokyo/Kyoto shops?

You can buy meat snacks, but beef products tend to be expensive in Japan. Alternatively, you can buy pork jerky or sea food jerky (fish, squid, cuttle fish, etc.) relatively cheaper. I love dried squid!

What are the restrictions she has? You can find most things that you would find in a supermarket in other countries that you'll find in Japan. It's not as if it's all weird seafood, tofu, and rice. I think that's the stereotype that people get when thinking of Japanese food.

You could probably even look around online at different foods if you're worried about what can be eaten.

She has autoimmune issues that are prevented by avoiding easily avoidable things like sugar, wheat, dairy and eggs. But she also has to watch out for things that are harder to avoid, like vanilla and coconut. Good clean proteins and veggies are staples for her. We think there will be plenty of good options for her on this trip, but wanted to get a feel for what is available at retail shops. I really appreciate the thoughtful answers from folks so far.

Look up "weider protein packs japan" on google. They might fit the bill for you. You can find those at most convenience stores. I lived on these whenever I was travelling in Japan. They were a quick snack/meal when we were touring around the city.
