Getting from Hakone to Kyoto 2020/1/21 10:33
Hi! We've scoured the internet and are coming up with conflicting answers. We are trying to get from Hakone to Kyoto. We will not have a JR pass and will have 2 large suitcases and 2 carry on cases with us. We'll be traveling on a Monday in March. Anyone know how we can make this happen without spending a fortune?

Go to Odawara Station and take the shinkansen to Kyoto Station?

You'll want to take the bullet train (Shinkansen) from Odawara to Kyoto. It will cost about 12000 yen each. Make sure to take a Hikari train as it costs the same as a Kodama train, but the Kodama is one full hour slower.

You will just use the Hakone railway to get back to Odawara from Hakone. That trip should just be a few hundred yen.

By train, answers as given above:

What constitutes a "fortune" varies from person to person, but the trip is over 400 km so it's not going to be cheap by high-speed train (i.e. ~12,500 yen).
If you want to spend a lot more time (around six hours), and less money, a bus options are around half that price.
