15 days trip to Japan for honeymoon

Hi, I'm planning a 16 honeymoon trip. What do you guys think about this itinerary? Appreciate any help and recommendations. We arrive in Tokyo and leave from Osaka
Tokyo - 5 nights with 1 or 2 sidetrips Nagoya - 1 night Takayama - 2 nights Kanazawa - 2 nights Kyoto - 3 nights Osaka - 1 night I think the 7 day JR pass won't cover all these trips between cities. Is the 14 day the next best solution? Maybe travel from Kyoto to Osaka by regular train? Thanks

Nice plan. I'm not wild on Nagoya so I would maybe try Atami for that night instead

Hi!
It would partially depend on what exactly your side trips and whether you are flying into Haneda or Narita.
I might not even get a rail pass, since your only shinkansen trip as currently listed in Tokyo to Nagoya. It's close to 15,000 yen from Tokyo to Takayama via train and then another ~6500 yen to get from Kanazawa to Kyoto. The best method to get from Takayama to Kanazawa is often bus via Shirakawa Go because the trains between Takayama and Toyama are not all that frequent.
I'm sure you are going to have a great trip!

What season are you coming to Japan?
I suppose the best place for visiting would be different for each season.

A 7 day pass wont work as you have more that 7 day apart of long distance travel. And 14 day pass would just be too much for limited travel.

Surprised no one mentioned the mantra of gyou can stay in Kyoto instead of changing your hotel to Osaka g yet. But itfs true and I am one of those people who say that. Kyoto and Osaka are about 30 min by train, so really no need to change hotel.
Regarding the JR Pass. Are you flying out from Osaka or Tokyo? That would be a potential game changer.

Hi, Thanks for all the answers so far. More details about the trip
Arrival 5 May 2020 Tokyo (Haneda) - 5 nights (2 sidetrips, thinking Kamakura, Nikko, Hakone, Fuji Five Lake) Nagoya - 1 night Takayama - 2 nights Kanazawa - 2 nights Kyoto - 3 nights Osaka - 1 night (check-in 18/05/2020) Fly out from Osaka (Kansai) - 19/05/2020
Not sure about spending 1 night in Nagoya, but the the shinkansen from Tokyo to Takayama takes 4.5hours and it seems a big stretch. Would you cut Osaka and stay one more night in Kyoto and fly out from Kansai? I'm using the JR Pass Calculator from the site and it's a close call to the 7 days pass with 2 sidetrips in Tokyo. What do you guys think?
Thanks

You could take the shinkansen from Tokyo to Kanazawa then Kanazawa bus to Shirakawa (potter around for 2 hours) then back on the bus to Takayama, then Takyama to Kyoto. If you want to break up the Takayama to Kyoto leg, you can stop at Hikone which I always recommend, not heaps to do but a nice castle town on Lake Biwa a few minutes from Maibara which is the shinkansen stop between Nagoya and Kyoto.
Hikone has excellent beef and fish, and the original castle is one of my favorites with nice gardens. In fact we are going back for a couple of nights in April (yay!), oddly enough on our way back from Takayama, though we are staying at another town on the way through.

I would just accept the 4.5 hour trip to Takayama and use it to rest my feet as I walk a great deal in Japan :) That then gives me an extra night to add elsewhere. I might as been discussed stop at Hikone on the way between Kanazawa & Kyoto. As others have said, the castle & gardens are really nice as is the museum attached to the castle. Otherwise I would add a day to Kyoto as there is so much to see. Unless your flight out of Kansai is early I would drop the night in Osaka & visit for a day trip.
Regarding the JR Pass. If it's a close run thing about it paying off I would buy it anyway as it gives you the freedom to make a last minute decision to visit somewhere without worrying about the rail fare.

Depends on you, but if it was my honeymoon I would DEFINITELY plan at least two nights in an amazing rural onsen ryokan. For slow pace of life, romance, spending quality time together, amazing food, etc., I canft think of anything better. One easy contender would be to stay a night in the Oku-Hida region when near Takayama (skipping Nagoya would create that night for you). The other night could be at the end of your Kanazawa trip (Noto Peninsula?), perhaps. Ryokan stays work best for me if you can space them apart a little, to punctuate the bustle of cities.
