I want to buy an IC card in Fukuoka to use on the subway and buses. Which one should I buy as there are 3. Sugoca, Nimoca and Hayakaken. Can I then use this same card in Kyoto and Tokyo? Is the one card interchangeable between buses and subway. I will have a JR pass for the trains.

Any of them would be fine. They are all mutually compatible with each other. Can I then use this same card in Kyoto and Tokyo?Yes. Is the one card interchangeable between buses and subway.Yes, you can use the card on buses and subways. More details: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2359_003.html

Thankyou for confirming I can use these cards on different modes of transport. I was just confused as my hotel had told me I needed different cards.

It's not like all the various cards are selling all together. Each card has a region of origin, and you buy it there. You'd have a hard time trying to buy a Hayakaken card in Tokyo, or Suica in Fukuoka. But they are virtually completely interchangeable, so it doesn't really matter. That said, you can only refund a card in its region of origin.

If you transfer to domestic terminal from international terminal at Fukuoka Airport, you will proceed to Fukuoka Subway station which issues Hayakaken card. As for SUGOCA card, you can purchase one at Hakata station. For nimoca card, I've seen online that you can even purchase one even on the bus (never heard anyone trying this before). It's issued by Nishitetsu and is possible to purchase one at Tenjin station. SUGOCA: https://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/sugoca/ or https://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/sugomon_pass/Hayakaken (͂₩): http://subway.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/hayakaken/ or https://subway.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/eng/fare/one/#no02 nimoca: https://www.nimoca.jp/

I need to take the subway to get to my hostel so thatfs useful to know that I can buy the hayakaken card at the domestic terminal in Fukuoka. Likewise I suppose I can then return it there when I leave Japan. Thanks

I have a 2013 Hayakaken and I had used it in 2016 and 2018 in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, etc. So, no problem purchasing a Hayakaken at all
