Not sure about hodo in this sentence 2020/3/19 03:56

I understand this as: "He (Name) said that he killed someone. I can somewhat believe it because we don't know anything about him."

I'm not very sure about the 信用できるほど part. That means we can do something (believe) to a certain extent? Did I translate this correctly? Or is there a better way to translate it?

Context: Someone brought up the story that (Name) killed someone before, which he admitted. Now he's in trouble and a guy (not among the ones who brought this up) says this about him.

Thanks in advance!

- I’ve heard (name) killed someone, and we don’t know him enough to trust him, right?

I hear, I’ve heard that…
信用できるほど = enough to trust (him)

Written with particles and punctuation to help easier understanding:
(Name)って人を殺してるという話だし、(彼を)信用できるほど 僕たちは 彼のことを 知らないでしょう。

100-percent agree with AK's translation.

The sentence is a little hard to parse, since it's cramming a lot of information into a single sentence. If your native language is English, it might be a little easier to see how the parts fit together if you mentally rearrange
to

might be a little easier to understand if you

For this case, it sounds better to learn ほど and ない together as a collocation.

JP
: S1がdo (A)するほど(には)S2がdo(B)しない
EN
: S2 do not (B) to the extent that S1 do (A)
= S2 do not (B) so much that S1 do (A)
= S2 do not (B) enough for S1 to do (A)

JP
EN
: We do not know him to the extent that we can trust him.
= We do not know him so much that we can trust him.

JP
EN
: Tomorrow it would not get cold to the extent that snow accumulates.
= Tomorrow it would not get so cold that snow accumulates.
= Tomorrow it would not get cold enough for snow to accumulate.
