Changing from work to spouse visa 2020/4/13 15:26
I am a 35 year old European woman and I have been living in Japan on a work visa for a few years. (Engineer/Specialist in humanities/Int'l services category)
I got 1 year at first, then 3, then 3 again so I guess immigration does not consider me a risky person.
This latest visa is going to expire this year in November.

Meanwhile, I got married to a Japanese national on November 2019. I did not change my visa from a work one to a spouse visa because I did not see the need to at the time.
But now, with the expiry of my visa coming soon, I'm wondering if a spouse visa would get me closer to being able to apply for permanent residency.
Additionally, this is a bit of an afterthought but since I work in tourism, I can't be sure 100% that my job is going to withstand this crisis and I think being on a spouse visa could give me more freedom to work different types of jobs.
For what it's worth, I speak Japanese (N1 level) and work at a medium/large Japanese company. I also hold a qualification related to my job that I acquired in Japan.
My husband's income and mine are similar.

Do you all think it would be worth it making the change, or (provided job security) am I better off with the work visa?

Thank you for any insight you may have.

Provided your employer sponsorship continues for another 3 years, it doesnft matter much.
This is because if you want to apply for PR status based on employer-sponsored resident status, you need to have lived in Japan on that status for 10 years, and if you want to apply for PR based on spouse of Japanese national status, you need to have lived in Japan on that status for 3 years (having a 3-year spouse status granted).

So gifh you get the 3-year one on either, the 10th year on your current work resident status or the 3rd year on spouse will fall in the same year.

I would say since youfve been living in Japan for quite some time with 3-year employer-sponsored resident status, you are likely to get another 3-year contract thus a 3-year resident status? I cannot say that gfor sureh about gspouseh – they might give you a 1-year one initially, or might giver you a 3-year one right awayc if you get a 1-year one, then you have one year longer to wait till you can apply for PR. Best wishes.
