Fukuoka City Accommodation Tax 2020/7/21 18:34
The city of Fukuoka has introduced accommodation tax, setting the levy at \200 per guest per night for rooms costing less than \20,000, and at \500 for rooms that cost \20,000 or more - Can someone please clarify the \20,000 - Is this room rate if \20,000 per night or per stay??

Thanks, Mel

Thanks for responding.
However, how come when I made a reservation for 7 nights costing 75,000 yen (Six nights with nightly rate of below 10,000 yen and 1 night with a nightly rate of 10,700 yen) there is this notice from the hotel - "A tax is imposed by the city: JPY 500 per person, per night". Doesn't this mean the 'Stay above 20,000 yen will incur the tax of 500 yen/pax/night ruling means 20,000 yen room rate for the whole stay'?

I checked the website of City of Fukuoka, and as far as I can read from there, JapanCustomTours is correct.

It might be just a notice for those who ghappenh to stay at a per-night rate over 20,000 yen, not necessarily applicable to you. Maybe they wrote it wrong. Maybe they just wanted to mention the highest that was applicable to anyone, so as to show that there is no "hidden" charges.
Did you get an invoice already, and does the total include the tax? I believe some hotels charge you the local accommodation tax only upon check-out.

Hi AK,

Since itfs not a prepaid reservation I just got the confirmation of the booking. The total excludes the city tax. They just state Ifd have to pay \7000 for the 7 nights stay - works out to \500/night/pax. I hope the hotel is mistaken 😬

Just as a follow-up, some cities do charge per person/night (Kyoto as an example). I have not checked the detail for Fukuoka.
Also, you may need to pay in person at the hotel, even for pre-paid/booked hotels. It's an annoying aspect of the booking websites that they collect taxes and "service fees" but not always local city or bathing/onsen taxes. Like many things in life, "it depends".

I checked the hotelfs English website. Found info on accommodation tax in their FAQ. However, it only mentions Tokyo & Kyoto. Ifll send the hotel an enquiry form.
I know we will be paying this tax additionally upon c/out and am quite used to it, having stayed at numerous Onsen ryokans so it doesnft really bother me.
Thanks for all your feedbacks 🙏

It looks like a standard text they use; in addition, before that they mention that it ranges from 200 – 500, so I donft think they charge 500 to everyone.

Many cities are implementing such a tax, though not all. Nobody wants to pay more, but it is not in any way excessive.
