Shinkansen tickets, use 2020/10/13 21:41
So itfs been almost a good 5 years since Ifve used the Shinkansen and I just wanted to confirm how to go through the conventional and Shinkansen ticket gates with my Suica and one Shinkansen ticket. Please correct me if Ifm wrong.

JR Osaka to JR Shin Osaka - use my Suica and while still inside JR Shin Osaka I will proceed through the Shinkansen transfer gates using my Shinkansen ticket first then tap my Suica to pay the conventional line fare between Osaka and Shin Osaka stations.

Arrive JR Tokyo And if transferring to Tokyo Metro line then do the above in reverse. Shinkansen ticket and suica to transfer and at arrival metro station just use the Suica to get out and pay the fare between Tokyo and your destination station.

I understand if you donft have a Suica/IC card you cannot go through a conventional line ticket machine and to a Shinkansen transfer gate (Marunouchi side of Tokyo Sta.) You need to go through a proper Shinkansen ticket gate (Yaesu side of Tokyo Sta.) to get to the Shinkansen platforms so itfs like an express route as you donft need to go through a conventional line ticket gate.

So how about a JR station like Nishi Akashi Sta in Hyogoken? Therefs only one Shinkansen gate/Shinkansen transfer gate. So what if you got your Shinkansen ticket in the mail and went to the station but donft have an IC card? How do you go through the initial conventional line ticket gates to get to the Shinkansen gate? Do you have to buy a physical ticket for the conventional line just to get inside? Or can you just use the same Shinkansen ticket for both conventional and Shinkansen ticket gates?

Please advice.

Thanks.

I don't understand what you say.
if you have classical paper-based ticket,
when you go from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka by shinkansen and conventional line from shin-osaka to Osaka.
your base-fare ticket is valid to Osaka station.
your base-fare ticket will be come back to you from the machine at shin-osaka.

I have no experience to use it at Kobe.
but, it should work similarly.

your thinking way is on ticket-less system. but, the principle is still on paper-based ticket. IC card system is designed to work as same as paper-based one.

Ifm the same actually. Ifd like to know.

Usually youfd get 2 tickets. Base fare ticket and the other one I forget.

What if you only get one ticket which is a combination of both base fare and the other? Will it work the same?

Easy part first: Arrive JR Tokyo And if transferring to Tokyo Metro line then do the above in reverse.
On arrival at Tokyo, the "metro" is a different company so you actually use only the shinkansen ticket at the gates to exit the station. Even if you use the transfer gate to head to the meto, you use it at both gates and it is consumed on the exit of the JR station ( and the the short walk to the metro). Entering the metro is completely separate, and you can use your SUICA/PASMO as normal.

As mentioned above, a usual shinkansen ticket includes the Osaka city zone including Osaka to Shin-Osaka so no SUICA required. If you are using the subway to get to Shin-Osaka, similar to the above, you are not on JR so exit one company before entering the other. It's been that way as long as I can remember, so if you were doing that five years ago, you didn't need to.

The exception is if you get a point-to-point SmartEx ticket. They do not cover the city zones at each end and you cannot use the transfer gates. You must enter/exit the shinkansen areas directly.

Re: Shinkansen tickets, use 2020/10/15 12:27
yes. it should work as same as the two ticket system.
the point you have to know is:
some ticket- less discount tickets are sold by JR tokai. if you buy it. it is only valid until shin-osaka from tokyo, because shin-osaka to osaka is on JR west.
it also happens in tokyo area, it is valid until tokyo station. if you use yamanote line, you have to pay the fare from tokyo station to your designate station.
