Shikoku: Matsuyama to Nakatsu Gorge

Hi!

I want to visit Shikoku and stay in Matsuyama (Dogo Onsen). I am also interested to visit Nakatsu Gorge (Staying at Yunomori for 1-2 nights). When I searched Google for public transportation between Matsuyama & Nakatsu Gorge it�fs shows I need to catch train all the way to Kochi then change train to Sakawa, then another 30 min plus bus ride. Altogether taking 5 hours! The route map shows a huge roundabout route. Would anyone know of alternative public transportation?

You can drive there by rental car in 90 minutes. But there is no direct connection by public transport through the mountains between Matsuyama and Kochi Prefecture. So, you would have to make that huge detour by either bus or train (highway bus between Matsuyama and Kochi is cheaper and faster than the train).

These buses get you as far as Kochi City. From there, you should still use a train and the bus to the gorge.

Would these highway buses be equipped with a toilet on board? Secondly, would the JR Pass be applicable for the JR bus?

Yes, there are toilets in JR Shikoku bus (at the bottom), and you can also use JR pass.
