Do senior high school student join clubs?

In my school in singapore, extracurricular activities is compulsory in secondary school, what is it like in japan?
I've heard that in senior highschool, students stop participating in clubs to focus on their exams. Is that true? If so, roughly what percentage of students actually left their clubs or stopped joining in senior high school?

To begin with, club activities are not compulsory in Japanese senior high schools. They are optional.
And yes, most students stop participating in clubs to focus on their college entrance exams if they intend to take them. I'm afraid I don't have any numbers at hand.
