Hiking with Toddler 2022/9/22 13:31
Wefre looking at doing an easy hike near Tokyo, currently considering Senjogahara in Nikko. Would like to hear experiences please and if it can be done with a toddler (probably in a carrier).

If this idea is crazy and not recommended, is there any other trail you can recommend? We hiked Takao before and would like to hear about other recommendations.

Thank you

I'd say the ideal easy hike near Tokyo is Mt. Takao.

Access to the trails is incredibly easy, as the starting point for all of them is just a short walk away from Takaosanguchi Station, which is about an hour from downtown Tokyo. The area around the station has shops where you can buy snacks/drinks to keep your kid from getting hungry or thirsty while you're hiking.

There are multiple trails to the top, with varying levels of challenge. None of them are particular grueling and most take around 90 minutes, but they all have nice mountain scenery, and some pass by temples and waterfalls.

Arguably best of all, at the top of the trails there are food stands and vendors, making it easy to relax and recharge before heading back down. There's also a funicular cable car that runs between the trail head and about 80 percent up the mountain. It's possible to hike up and take the funicular back down, in case your kid has plenty of energy at the start but is feeling too tired to make it back down without getting cranky or needing to be carried.

Thank you! We loved Takao during our autumn trip. The chair lift down was particularly interesting. Would like to try other trails though.
