Best place to buy winter clothings in Tokyo 2022/11/2 08:34
Hi,
My family is travelling from Singapore to Japan in mid Dec and we planned to go to Tokyo first then Hokkaido. While we have the usual down jackets, we may need something extra for climate conditions in Hokkaido (we are going to Niseko village). We also need to get boots.
Could you advise where is the best place to buy winter clothings in Tokyo?
Many thanks

I'm originally from Tokyo, and prefer the summer heat over the winter climate, but Uniclo down would actually do unless you're doing winter sports. Heattech-type underwear can also be handy. If you are indeed doing winter sports, you can usually rent ski wear at the resort (although you should check in advance), which would be the best option.

As for boots, just buy city boots at an ABC Mart or something along the line. Again, you can buy serious boots, but then you'd have trouble walking the city pavement in Hokkaido.

Be sure to go to a drug store and buy enough disposable warmers like Hokaron. There are warmers for your pockets, there are warmers for your shoes, and there are warmers to stick on your socks in case you still want to wear them with your shoes off. Each disposable warmer lasts for about 5 to 10 hours depending on the merchandise.

Once you're in Hokkaido, almost every kiosk sells spikes you can put on your shoes/boots.

Warmers can also be bought in Hokkaido.

I'd like to add that the city of Sapporo is beautifully designed to keep pedestrians warm by providing a vast underground path and quality heating.

I hope it helps.

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. They are very helpful. As for pants, what type of pants should I get? Do they have to be waterproof and windproof?

Regarding the pants it depends what you want to do.

Skiing, just rent the clothes in location.
City walking, a normal trouser will be okay.
Light hiking, I would go for something water repellent and with a bit of fleece internally.

As suggested, clothing including pants depends on what you intend to do. You need to provide more info before asking another question.

For example, I'm really bad at cold temperature, so I wore what I'd wear in a snowy mountain, which was something very close to ski wear. I wore the heaviest Eddie Bauer down available. But, hey, people in the cities of Hokkaido are ordinary city people just like those we see in Tokyo. They wear regular high-heel shoes, short skirts, suits and what not under their slim coats. People like me stood out and obviously looked like an idiotic tourist. But I didn't care, because I didn't want to be cold, I wanted to walk outdoors, and I was a tourist.

For clothes of very small and very large sizes,
you may have to wait several days more.

For example,
Uniqlo sells XS and XXL to 4XL size tops and bottoms
currently only at the online store.
When such online-only items are in stock and you buy them,
it may take a few days until you can receive them at a Uniqlo real store.

Warm inner wears make you sweaty,
so it's better to prepare spare ones, I think.

Regarding Uniqlo HeatTech inner wears,
there are Ultra Warm and Extra Warm series.

Although I cannot make a simple comparison,
roughly speaking,
Ultra Warm (Chou-gokudan [ ɒg ]) wears
seem to be warmer than Extra Warm (Gokudan [ ɒg ]) wears,
and Extra Warm wears seem to be warmer
than normal HeatTech wears.

Re: kairo (pocket body warmers) 2022/11/3 15:07
Uco and andrea have mentioned pocket warmers.

Disposable kairo (pocket body warmers) can be useful.

Note:

(1) Be careful not to get a low-temperature burn,
which can be caused by long-time warming,
even when you don't feel hot.

(2) It sounds better, when you sleep, not to use kairo warmers.

(3) While they are warm,
please don't dispose disposable kairo warmers.

Uniqlo's heat tech is not recommended for intense exercise because it does not dry up easily.
Recommended for walking around town.
I'm a woman, and I wear Gunze's tuche innerwear when I'm doing strenuous exercise.
https://www.gunze.jp/store/g/vTC4046/?brand=tuche
Climbing stores will also sell quick-drying shirts.
I don't like it that much (in terms of design), but Montbell is famous.

There are also Ishii Sports and Kojitsu Sanso.

Other famous countries are Patagonia and Colombia.

I think you can buy sporting goods at a reasonable price at Aeon Sports Authority.
https://www.sportsauthority.jp/shop/default.aspx
ABC Mart is also reasonably priced.
In Tokyo, there are many sporting goods stores (including ski goods stores) in Ogawamachi (around Jimbocho).
Ski equipment can be rented at ski resorts, but you can also buy snow gloves and hats.
