Pertains to an annual celebration in Japan

In 1980, I met the Japanese ambassador to Ankara Turkey and we discussed where he was from. I can't recall now, but there was a tradition in his town where the elderly would make an annual trip up a mountain.
Can anyone tell me about this?

If you remembered his name, I believe it should be easier to search from there to see where he was from. A group of elderly people making a yearly pilgrimage up an anonymous mountain is unfortunately far too vague in a country littered with mountains and a silvering population.
