Travel in Japan? 2022/12/22 09:29
Hello everyone. I am looking for some advice on the best way to travel around Japan. We (a family of four adults) arrive on 30/12. We stay the first night in Haneda. We then travel to Nozawa on 31/12, to Kyoto on 4/01 - 09/01 (hoping to do a day trip to Hiroshima in this time) then back to Tokyo 09/1 - 11/01 before heading back to the airport and home. What are my best options for travel? I feel I will need to buy a 14 day JR Pass, but will it be good value? I also just read something about a Suica card?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

You have lots of homework to do.
Start by reading: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e627.html

Also, many places are closed on 12/31, 1/1 (and some on 1/2 and 1/3). Read here: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2064.html

The discount is small because the travel period is a little longer and the round trip is not made along the same route.
However, I haven't calculated either exactly, but I think you can save about 20,000 JPY over the 14-day pass.

A to B(via C), B to A as "base fare" and each Limited Exp(shinkansen and) tickets fee plus is the best.
A : Tokyo
B : Hiroshima
C : Kanazawa

If will be bad weather, u should change to A to B(via D) at Iiyama stn.
D : Matsumoto, Nagoya
If do it, u should pay btw Iiyama and Nagano base fare, too.
Anyway, JR "base fare" tickets are cheaper for longer distances.

Ticketing for this slightly more complicated route takes time, which is not desirable if your flight arrives late, as it will be processed the next morning. Every counter will be crowded in the morning.

Fares for the Tokyo Monorail are not included because it is not "JR" (as railway company).
Also, transportation costs are required separately in Tokyo, Kyoto City and Hiroshima City, so buy a Suica card or discounted tickets for each cities.
The first fare mentioned is only for long distance travel and is a ticket that allows you to exit the ticket gate at any intermediate station, and both AB/BA are valid for "7 days."
