We plan to do the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route on 17 or 18 April 2023. How busy is the route on the first days after opening? Also is the route opening sometimes delayed due to too much snow?

Rather busy, but weekdays are much better than weekends. So, April 17-18 is quite a good choice. Good weather will attract larger crowds.
Also is the route opening sometimes delayed due to too much snow?
It is very rare. Can't remember it happening in any recent year. But in extreme weather (very strong winds, or very heavy rain or snow, it could theoretically happen).
