Hi - I'm going to Japan in February and want to visit Kisoji and hike part of the Nakasando. How is the weather link at that time? Is it safe to hike? Do you know snow boots or is regular hiking shoes ok? Thank you

You may want to ask that question to Quinlan, an American YouTuber who lives in Japan, who posted videos from Kiso Valley in the snow. https://youtu.be/hjhBxpUndUM I think which section of the Nakasendo you hike will dictate what to wear. Some sections are very steep, others paved and flat. I walked between Narai and Kiso-hirasawa in dry weather, that was an easy stroll. Assuming you want to hike between Tsumago and Magome, the most popular trail, I'm thinking you will also need hiking poles if it snows. Fortunately, you probably don't need to worry about encountering bears in February.
