ETC or Expressway card in Kyushu 2023/2/12 15:10
My dear friends are traveling for 2 weeks in Kyushu very soon and are trying to work out whether they need an ETC - or an Expressway Card.
We did a similar trip a few years ago (twice in fact) and didn't bother to get either, possibly unwisely but who knew...
So... they'll be arriving in Fukuoka and driving down as far as Kagoshima over up to 14 days, then getting the train back to Fukuoka to leave.
What would you experienced Japan travelers recommend for that trip, through Nagasaka, Kumamoto, Mt Aso and Yufuin, Beppo, maybe Takachiho... ?
If they don't get an ETC or an Expressway card, will they find any toll gates without the possibility to pay the toll at the time, either in cash or by CC?
It's all a bit complicated - I hope you can help.
thank you so much

get a highway pass if travelling long distance by car anywhere in japan. and the passes will be much cheaper than paying individual gate fees.

For Kyushu, you really only need a car for the central and eastern side of the island.

Places not easily accessible by by public transport:-
Shimabara
Hirado
Asosan
Kuju Mountains
Takachiko
Hiyoyoshi
Izumi/Akane
Nichinan coastline
