My partner and I have been 45times to Japan and have booked flights for this year, 6th October - 8th November.
Previously our trips were as follows: 1: Osaka/Kyoto (1 Week) 2: Okinawa/Miyakojima/IshigakiJima/Osaka/Kinosaki Onsen/Takayama/Kanazawa/Himeji/Tokyo (4 Weeks) 3: Hokkaido (Shiretoko/Kushiro/Lake Akan/Obihiro/Sapporo/Otaru/Asahikawa/Tokyo (2.5 Weeks) 4: Kyushu (Fukuoka/Kumamoto/Nagasaki/Karatsu/Kagoshima/Mount so/Miyazaki/Yakushima/Amamioshima (5 Weeks) 5. Aomori/Hachinohe/Tokyo/Izu Peninsula/Nagoya/Onomichi/Shiminamikaido/Osaka/Kyoto
As usual, it's hard to decide where to go as so many places are appealing, Food is really important, we also love exploring cities, going out and meeting people, cycling, hiking, onsens, nature, museums etc. Wefd ideally like a mix of big city, countryside, volcanos, mountains, villages and beautiful coastal areas. I speak basic Japanese badly but enough to be useful and allow us to be unstressed being in areas with no English.
Some very initial ideas are as follows:
*Option 1*
Hokkaido (Hakodate/Noboribetsu/Shikotsu-Toya/Sapporo) Chubu (Toyama/Matsumoto/Kiso Valley etc.) Shikoku (Matsumoto/Kochi/Iya Valley etc.)
*Option 2*
Hokkaido Shikoku+Seto Inland Sea (Aoshima, Shodoshima etc.)
*Option 3*
Chubu Hiroshima + Miyajima + Shikoku
*Option 4*
Hokkaido Chubu (more time, more places, no Shikoku)
Option 1 appeals as we loved Hokkaido and I'd love to see some of the parts we didn't get to, the Alpine area also looks great, we spent a day in Kamikochi and it was very beautiful, timing should be good for Koyo too. Shikoku also looks wonderful and is one of the less touristy parts. We have 32 full days so are very lucky.
I wonder if it's trying to squeeze too much in, we're not the types to rush around on hectic schedules, nor do we need to try and see everything there is to see, there is always a next time. So the other options are limiting to 2 areas rather than three, maybe Chubu makes more sense at that time due to Koyo compared too Shikoku but the combo of Hiroshima + Shikoku is very inviting.
However, there are so many other possibilities, lower Tohoku, Nikko, Niigata, Sado Islands, Nara, Wakayama, Tottori etc. Any advice would be welcome, we're happy to do a mix of Rail Pass use and Hire Car when needed.
