Obon Festival in Asahikawa, Hokkaido

Hello,
Our trip to Japan will take place during the end of July to mid August. Around 6-16 of August we will be in Hokkaido, and specifically during 13-16.8 (peak days from what I understand) we will be in Asahikawa, traveling to Biei and Furano to see Asahidake, the different flower farms and blue ponds.
My question is - what should be expected in terms of transportation? Will it be extremely busy? Is there a chance any of the aforementioned attractions will be closed? Should we reserve seats on the train once we arrive to make sure we're all set?
