Ashikaga Flower Park - itinerary suggestions

We're planning to visit Ashikaga Flower Park later in the day so that we can stay for the night-time illumination.
Looking for suggestions for things to do the earlier part of the day if we want to make it a day trip from Tokyo - any other interesting places to see or good places to eat or any local food specialties in that direction? We will most likely be using a JR Tokyo Wide Pass.
