Sushi restaurant in Kyoto? 2023/4/18 22:24
Hi all!

I have seen Kyubey recommended for high end sushis in Tokyo, but I will have a bit more time in Kyoto. I wonder if anyone has a similarly nice recommendation there? I am not interested in a kaiseki course, if that matters.

I will also visit Miyajima, Hagi and Matsue, in case you also have some outstanding eateries (not necessarily sushis) to recommend :)

Thanks in advance!

This place is famous for being Steve Jobs' favorite sushi restaurant.

Reservation is recommended.

Thanks for the recommendation! At that price point, however, the food and the atmosphere seem a bit too plain for me :)

Some youtubers mentioned "Sushitetsu" in Pontocho (starts at 7:15; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifJAmn0wZ3k). It was recommended to them by local person and that is always a good sign. I plan to go there when I come to Kyoto in May. Judging from video sushi looked good, price was reasonable and there was a line of people waiting outside and that is another good sign...

Although it probably does not fall into "high-end" category of sushi restaurants...

On Tabelog this list comes up when looking for high end sushi in Kyoto.

Expect to pay about 15,000 - 30,000 Yen/person for a makase sushi dinner (without drinks). Kyubey will set you aside a similar amount.

@haens: It looks nice for a casual meal, thanks! I'll give it a try if there's not too much queue. Since I'll be traveling alone, I might be able to snatch a counter seat more easily :)

@LikeBike: the link seems to be for the secondary branch, newly opened, of the Michelin starred "Sushi Matsumoto" in Tokyo. But there's also a 1 star Sushi Matsumoto in Kyoto, I suppose that's the one you were referencing.
Even so, the superior nigiri lunch menu at 5800 yens seems a real bargain, especially compared to their dinner menus! I wonder what's the catch? I'm very tempted to try it.

In Tokyo, I decided to book at Udatsu Sushi instead of Kyubey, for lunch. Same price range, but Udatsu is more conveniently located for me this time.
