Morioka - Miyako - Kitayamazaki access 2023/8/27 00:49
Hello,

I'm planning to go to Japan in late October - early November this year (2023). I'm planning to stay in Morioka for 2 nights and I would like to go to Kitayamazaki.

Based on my research, I know that I must use:
- JR train to go from Morioka to Miyako
- Sanriku train to go from Miyako to Tanohata station

Then from Tanohata station to Kitayamazaki, supposedly there is a "shared taxi" service, but I'm worried that the information I found on the internet might be outdated, is the "shared taxi" service still available as of 2023?

---

Also, it seems that I might have to spend quite a long time going from Morioka to Kitayamazaki through this route, so is it possible maybe to have a shared guided tour instead where someone will take me and other tour participants from a pick-up point in Morioka and go to Kitayamazaki?

Thank you.

Yes, the shared taxis is unfortunatelly still the best they offer in terms of public transportation (you need to reserve by phone at least 1 hour before departure). The specifics are outlined here:

Some taxi companies in the area may be willing to offer you customized sightseeing tours in the area, but don't expect them to be able to communicate in English. So called "sightseeing taxi" services usually cost a set amount for money for a set amount of time. I was able to find one taxi company that offers sightseeing preset taxi tours around Miyako, and suspect - but am not sure - that they could also do customized tours. I would bet, though, that they can communicate only in Japanese:

There are English-speaking staff at the tourist information centers in Morioka and Miyako, so you can check information in advance.
I'm not sure if they will reply to you, but there is also an email address on the bottom page.

Thank you for both answers.

I think I will have to just go with the trains + shared taxi as mentioned earlier. It seems that I'll have to rush a bit between the JR train and the Sanriku train and then again with the shared taxi, as missing one train/taxi will mean I have to wait quite a long time for the next scheduled train/taxi. But it is how it is I guess, I'll have to manage.

Aah, I'm so excited! Once again, thank you.
