Sapporo and Otaru in early Nov 2023/9/26 11:40
Hi, I am planning a trip to Sapporo (including Biei, Lake Toya, Jozankei) in early Nov (starting Nov 2).

Is it too late to catch the red and yellow autumn leaves and does it normally snow in both places at this time of the year? Apologies for the silly q.

Check here for the latest information on autumn leaves.

Normally, the best time to see them seems to end by late October.
It may be visible until early November in areas south of Sapporo, such as Hakodate and Onuma Park.

The average first snow in Sapporo is November 1st.

Otaru is October 31st.

there are three or more great parks in Sapporo that will provide you with great leaves and flowers if they are still available

Thank u so v much for all the guidance. I decided to push the trip backwards by a week (starting from Oct 26th and leaving Sapporo on Nov 2nd). Hopefully, I will still be able to catch the peak foliage at Jozankei n some decent yellow gingko n red maple leaves in Sapporo.

Which parks would you suggest in Sapporo? Thanks again

Although I have never been there, I believe that the ginkgo trees at Hokkaido University in Sapporo are famous nationwide.
The best time to see them is usually from late October to early November, but this year the best time to see them is from around November 2nd.

This year, the weather is still summer-like (around Tokyo) and the temperature was higher than usual, so the leaves may turn red later than usual.
Therefore, you may have a better chance of seeing the autumn leaves in Sapporo if you start on November 2nd, which was originally scheduled.
Weather News is a weather forecasting company, so I think this year's forecasts are more accurate than Walkerplus (a website affiliated with the publisher).

If it's Mt. Moiwa, you might be able to see it even on October 26th.

The best time to see Jozankei is around October 15th, and it is expected to be finished by October 29th.

Hoheikyo Dam is also scheduled to be at its best from around October 14th.

Thanks heaps. I might be missing out on the leaves in Sapporo. My itinerary is as follows:

SAPPORO - btw oct 27th to oct 31st covering Jozankei, Otaru, Lake Toya and Sapporo.

TOKYO - btw oct 31 to Nov 6th covering Tokyo, Lake Kawaguchiko and Tokyo.

I think I may miss out on the leaves in Sapporo. Any chance of catching these at lake Kawaguchiko (this would be iconic)…

I think you can probably see the autumn leaves in Sapporo.
Please open the linked website and check the latest information.
Translation software allows you to read information in English.
At this stage, it seems like the best time to go to Lake Kawaguchi is earlier than the best time to see it.

Depending on the future temperature, the season of autumn leaves may come earlier or later.
Please check back a little later.
