Driving to Minakami from Tokyo in early Jan

I'm planning to hire a car from Tokyo and drive to MICASA hotel in Minakami. Will a FWD vehicle with winter tires be able to handle the road conditions in January? Or do I need to hire a 4WD? Thanks!

Beside Driving,JR is your another option ,you
need 3080 yen to travel by JR via takasaki

I understand I can take the train. I'm visiting Minakami with my family and have lots of luggages. We'll prefer to drive if it's possible.

A 2wd going into the mountains in the coldest month of the year would be a risk. A bit of ice road, and you'll be stuck going uphill.
