Foreigners as fashion designers? 2023/10/24 04:42
I would love to fashion design in Japan. I plan to get a Masters Degree for Fashion Design in America first, then get a student visa in Japan to study more Japanese. (I am at a beginner level currently but I'm planning to take Japanese as a Minor when I get into college, and I am on-and-off studying on my own currently).

My main question is whether it would be possible to get a work visa as a Fashion Designer, despite being a foreigner, and only having been on a student visa for up to 2 years. (If anyone needs specifics, I'm thinking of designing at a place such as LIZ LISA). I cannot find any information on whether places such as that hire foreigners, especially for fashion design, and I have no idea whether I can go straight from a student visa to a work visa.

You can start by studying websites of and asking questions to schools. Here are a couple of them.

Since youfd have a degree in relevant field already, you would meet the educational requirement for a work visa. The question would be whether there will be companies in Japan who would be interested in hiring you full-time as an in-house fashion designer (and sponsor you as a visa). Your perspective as a non-Japanese, having studied in a prestigious school, your portfolio, etc., might be factors that employers in Japan might be interested in, as reasons they might select you over locals.
