Staying in Hakuba or Omachi?

Planning a fall visit. Picking up car in Nagano and will try to do Hakuba-One hike and Alpine Route so will be staying 3 nights in the area. Should I stay in Hakuba or Omachi? Would be heading to Kamikochi afterwards.
I assume Hakuba is most popular during the winter, not sure how popular it is in the fall and late summer. And I assume Omachi is more popular when the Alpine Route is open?
Which town is there more to do or more places that would be open in the autumn?
