Enquiry of jr pass for 5yrs old kids 2024/3/13 08:07
Hi,
I understood 5yrs old don't need to have a pass
And they are entitled to sit at non reserved seat

However if all adult are at the reserved seat car , can the 5yrs old sit at reserved car seat as well ?
Will the ticket checker ask us to leave the car n go to non reserved seat car ?

Kindly advice
Thanks

If a 5-year-old wants to use a reserved seat, you need to buy a child fare ticket for him/her.

In practice, though, if the reserved seat next to you happens to be unoccupied, you will probably be alright using it. Needless to say, you will have to vacate the seat if a passenger with a seat reservation arrives, and keep it tidy for that person's arrival.

And check if the JR PASS really is going to pay off. Youfll need to do a lot of long distance rides in a limited amount of time to make it pay off. Which for most tourists is too much and with a kid in tow seems to be too much to begin with.

Regarding the reserved seat. Essentially what it means is that your child doesnft have a right to a seat. So you must be prepared that she/he is sitting on your lap for the entire ride. Yes, maybe you are lucky and the seat besides you is free. Then she/he can use it until someone with a reservation comes.

But with all the traveling you must do to make the pass pay if and your child already being 5 years old it could make for some long and miserable rides if you donft get a seat for him/her

A 5yo is not entitled to a un-reserved seat. A ticket holder is entitled to a un-reserved seat.

A child may use a seat if it is free. But is needed to be given up for a ticket holder.

"they are entitled to sit at non reserved seat"
I think they don't have any right to occupy their seats. they can use non-reserved seats, if vacant.
when cars are busy, they need to give the seats to other adults, who have their own tickets.

There are no written rules that a 5yo without ticket may not use a non-reserved seat. According to the JR rule book, they are es entitled to a non-reserved seat as a grandpa or 30-year old.

@Uji the point is that OP only buys a JRP for the adults not for the kid. So kid has no right to sit on any seat. Reserved or unreserved but must sit on the lap of an adult.

However if there happens to be a free seat, the kid can sit there. But as soon as a person (child, grandpa, adult or otherwise) with a valid ticket shows up and wants that seat the child of the PP needs to vacate the seat and sit on the lap of their parents.

Obviously one can buy an extra ticket for the child for long distance trips only and hope that for shorter trips there will be enough free seats for everyone to sit.

As said I am a bit doubtful of the JRP can pay off.

Seems like Uji is right, at least for JR Central
https://global.jr-central.co.jp/en/tickets/type/adults_children.html

Children accompanied by an adult can sit for free on unreserved seats. There's no rule saying they have to pay for occupying an unreserved seat, even if someone else with a paid ticket wants the seat.

Children have the same right to use unreserved seats as adults! It just happens that their fare is 0 yen. Whether it is good manner for a child to give up a seat for an adult is a completely different question.
