ICOCA will keep working after 10 years? 2024/3/13 17:22
Hello,

I got my ICOCA back in 2014 but I also used it in 2019 with now issue. I know they have a 10 year lifetime but I wonder if it is from the last use (2019) or the first issue. If it is 1st issue than I am on the deadline here :) . Anyone can clarify this for me? Given the shortage of IC cards I want to make sure I don't encounter issues at the gates.

Thanks

I know they have a 10 year lifetime

No, they don't have a 10 year lifetime! They become unusable if you don't use them for ten years. Since you used yours 5 years ago, it will be fine for use this year (and at least the next 5 years).

Thanks Uji!

So every time I use it kind of resets! I should be fine then! Thanks for the information, appreciated.

Yes, that's right. The 10-year doomsday countdown is reset each time you use the card.

"doomsday reset" - thanks for the lol. I'll be thinking that all day when using my card now.

Just another question about this. If we have some old cards laying around that have not been used for 10years - they won't work. But someone said we can get them 're-set' at the customer service centre. Is that correct?

That's a good question. I also have an older card from 2012 which I never used after. I could still bring it with me and try to reset it?

Curious about this one. But Uji mentioned "doomsday" so I am not sure :)

it depends on card companies.
suica : you may ask to replace a new one with keeping the charged money.
icoca : the contract says the maximum is 10 years, but it can be used more than 10 years interval.
pasmo : they may not refund the charged money when it is expired after 10 years.
