Can a non-resident own a company in Japan? 2024/3/22 18:33
I am wondering if technically speaking if a company is set up, can a foreign non-resident own a company in Japan, like how they can in America?

For example can someone under SOFA status be an owner of a company in Japan?

Difficult - while not exact advice, one of the requirements is a "Japanese Representative". If someone with SOFA status qualifies - I personally don't know, I would suspect not. But I was able to set up a company while I held a proper status of residency. Check with a good accountant (there are bad accountants and lawyers out there.) You'll find out pretty quickly if you try registering something.

Yes, technically, non-residents can own companies in Japan, but regulations vary. Under SOFA status, ownership is possible, but consult legal experts for specifics. Ensure compliance with Japanese laws and consider implications for tax residency.
