Adoption in Japan 2024/4/3 20:25
Hi everyone. My husband and I are currently in Japan for vacation. His Japanese Stepdad wants to adopt him. Is there's a chance that he can change his visa status after being adopted? He's an adult but according to cityhall it is possible for him to be adopted. Thank you for answering

I will leave the legality of adoption to someone else, but what change in visa status would you be wanting? Change to citizen? That's not going to happen easily and they would lose their current citizenship as well.
Seems strange.

@H actually adult adoption is a thing in Japan. Most adoptions are adults rather than children:

I think his stepfather should speak with an attorney.

adoptions can be possible even when they are adults.
but, no influence for nationality. almost no chance for changing resident status, when adopted persons are adults.
adoption affects inheritance.

I suppose he wants to be a legal dad instead of a stepdad. Adult adoption is very common in Japan, especially when people want to legally inherit something such as physical fortunes as well as family rights.

It seems you've already spoken to the city hall, which is great. For visa matters, you should speak to the immigration office rather than to ask anonymous internet users like me.

You should also go back to the city hall to find out more about the pros and cons of being adopted. The city hall should be able to lead you to free legal advice. As a legal parent and child, your husband can also be inheriting various burdens.

I hope everything turns out for the best.

If you want to use the adoption for visa application(long term resident), it is only for child up to 18years old.
