Rat race in Japanese?

Do the Japanese have a word for this concept? Other than rattoreesu?

The closest Japanese-language equivalent is shachiku (社畜), which translates literally as "company livestock." As such it's used to describe someone working a demanding, non-rewarding job, often because they feel they have no other options, as opposed to describing the system itself.

And although "rattoreesu" would be how "rat race" would be pronounced by Japanese speakers, I don't think I've ever heard anyone use the term in Japan. At the very least, "rattoreesu" isn't something that would be understood by the average Japanese person if said in a conversation without some additional context.

Another word is 出世争い (which has variations like 出世競争 and 出世レース) which don't always have a negative tone to it as opposed to 社畜.
