Ex-ALT visa change experience 2024/5/7 22:27
Hello all, Ifm a former JET changing my visa to that of a specialist in humanities/international services, having landed a job at a fairly well known hotel chain (‹³ˆç —> l•¶’mŽ¯E‘Û‹Æ–±).

They of course, helped me through the procedure and it seemed that everything was in order when I submitted my documents.

However, it has been over a month since I submitted my application (April 1st), and immigration still has my application under review. I called this morning to inquire about my status, and that was what I was told.

So with all of that in mind, I have a few questions to those who have done the same, namely former ALTs or Eikaiwa instructors who got a job within the hospitality industry, namely:

1. How long did it take you to get the change? Did you apply around the same time as I did?

2. Did you get your request accepted on the first try?

3. How long did you request your visa to be, and how long did immigration end up giving you on your visa? I applied for 5 years, but I understand that they typically give only three, or sometimes just one year.

Any help and input would be greatly appreciated!

There is a separate group talking about people who applied for a COE or changing their visa process already. It's not uncommon to wait between 1-3 months on average. If you've only waited for a month, that's very normal. Just have to be patient my friend.

In terms for how long you want to change the visa for from 1, 3, or 5 years, you should tell them in the paperwork what you're applying for and they will probably give it to you if the application is accepted.

First of all you are in Japan, so that 'visa' is gone. Visa is what you need to enter Japan for a purpose.
What you have/given is a resident status/status of resident to legally reside/stay in Japan.

What you did was apply for Change of Status

OK......

1. Well with golden week holiday in between, and in addition to foreign graduates applying
for work status, expect thing to be slower.

2. As long as you tick all the requirement boxes, there is nothing to worry about.

3. That depends, most CoS get 1 year, and will increase once you do renewal/extension.
Immigration looks for stability/consistency. You can put whatever you want, most people just put
max. 5 years.
