Picking up Jr West tickets in Takayama

Hi all,

I'm a little confused by the JR West website indicating where tickets for JR Central trains, booked through the JR West website, can be picked up. There seems to be conflicting info online.

We are going to be in Takayama for the autumn festival this year, arriving from Matsumoto by bus. Following the festival we will take the JR Hida to Nagoya then transfer to the shinkansen to Osaka.

The info on the JR West website has both Takayama and Nagoya as JR Central stations where tickets can be picked up. However, they seem to be associated with the line in question e.g. Takayama is listed against the Takayama line (JR Hida), and Nagoya is listed on the Tokaido line. Will I be able to pick up both Takayama-Nagoya AND Nagoya-Osaka shinkansen tickets from Takayama station? Even better, can I even pick up both from Tokyo station before leaving for Takayama? Tokyo Station is listed as a pick up station on the Tokaido line as per Nagoya.

I assume you are not buying any rail pass. Then yes, you can buy JR tickets at any JR station in Japan. So you can buy them in Tokyo. I would simply buy them at the vending machine.

Thanks for the reponse! Yeah we won't be getting a rail pass for this section of our trip. The only reason we want to book in advance is that because it is the Autumn festival Takayama will be crammed and we will need a seat reservation for the JR Hida to Nagoya.

We are currently thinking of getting a Shinkansen to Osaka with only about 20 mins layover in Nagoga, so might not have much time to buy tickets there, we'd much rather book ahead on the JR West website and pick the tickets up either in Takayama or Tokyo. Maybe we just buy the Nagoya-Osaka ticket in Takayama, though, as you say.

From a financial point of view you should buy the entire ride as one ticket. That is a bit cheaper than buying Takayama -Nagoya and Nagoya -ShinOsaka separately.
