Train Stations and Oversized Luggage 2024/10/22 01:23
Hello!

I'm going to be heading up to Hakone for a day but I don't want to haul my oversize luggage bag (H: 84cm, W: 49cm, D: 32cm) around. I belief all of the lockers are not suitable for this size.

I was just wandering if I can ask train stations like Hakone-Yumoto Station to keep it behind the counter for around half a day before I take it back, and take the train back up to Tokyo. If so, may I ask what are the usual fees for keeping luggage bags behind the counter?

Thank you very much.

I don’t think that a train station like Hakone would do that. However, tourist offices often do that. However I couldn’t find confirmation that Hakone Yumoto station tourist information does it. So better to call them ahead to make sure.
Or alternatively send your big luggage by courier already to your next hotel. It will take about 1-2 days, ask your hotel where you are before Hakone, to arrive.
Within Hakone there is also a same day delivery service :

First please read Japanguide's "luggage" page.

https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2274.html

It says "it is recommended not to bring large suitcases, strollers, music instruments and sport equipment onto trains." I very strongly agree with it. If you have large luggage, please read their "Takuhaibin Delivery Service" page.

good morning

小田急旅行センター Odakyu Travel Centre at 箱根湯本 Hakone-Yumoto Station
accepts suitcase with total dimension less than 160cm and total weight under 25kg
for temporary storage
https://www.odakyu-travel.co.jp/departure/hakoneyumoto/index.html

otherwise same day baggage delivery services accepts suitcase
with total dimension less than 200cm and total weight under 30kg

ps. i am more intrigued as to how you are planning to bring such an oversize luggage
to Hakone eg 箱根湯本 Hakone-Yumoto Station to start with :)
Hakone is probably one of the busiest tourist areas in japan and the sight of an oversize luggage
may not be received warmly (as shared by カエル先生)

have a wonderful trip~

The OPs luggage actually isn’t that big. If you add it all up it’s 165 cm. Barely over 160 cm. Biggest size for Yamato seems to be 200. Next 180 then160. So this luggage isn’t small but ain’t enormous either.
