Imperial Palace doing tours right now? 2024/11/1 03:42
I will be in Tokyo next week and would love to tour the Imperial Palace. The website is a bit confusing, but can anyone confirm if the palace is doing tours right now, specifically November 5th or November 7th 2024?

Thanks!

「would love to tour the Imperial Palace」
It's worth noting that even on the tours, you don't really go into the palace itself, just a section of the grounds that can't be accessed by non-tour members, and that tour-only area isn't significantly more beautiful/luxurious than the non-tour area (mainly nice pine trees and some semi-classic building exteriors). The appeal really is more "You're standing close to where the imperial family is" as opposed to getting a glimpse at the traditional/historical/opulent lifestyle.

That's not to say it's not interesting at all, but I've known people who went out of their way to fit an imperial palace visit into their Tokyo trip schedule and came away disappointed because they expected it to be like visiting Buckingham Palace or Versailles, or to at least feel like visiting a Japanese castle, but it's really nothing like those. Again, not trying to talk you out of going, but thought you might like to know in advance what to expect.

Having participated in one of the first tours after they were introduced I can totally second what Guest is saying.

You basically walk the same way visitors use during new year and emperor's birthday when the premises are open to the public, just without the crowd and the atmosphere (when the royal family is greeting the crowd and everbody is cheering and waving flags)

It's okay, and if you have the time go for it. But you're not missing out on anything outstanding IMHO.

Imperial Palace in Tokyo is a destination to skip. The one in Kyoto is worth a visit if you have time.
