Escalators at Shinagawa Station Takanawa exit

Dear kind readers: I wonder if anyone would be able to answer or find out the answer to my question. We usually stay near Shinagawa Station. Last month when we arrived in Japan, the escalators at the Takanawa exit had been removed due to the stationfs major renovation. It was there in May when we were last there. Because the escalators were gone, the line to the lone small elevator was always very long with baby carriages, people with large luggages, and elderly & handicapped people like myself. Would anyone know how long before escalators will be reinstalled? Or is there another way to get down to street level? It was a pretty difficult experience climbing those stairs daily. We stay at Shinagawa because the station layout is very easy for us to navigate and we know where all the escalators and elevators are. LOL. We are considering staying near a different station next time if it will not be ready. Anyone know of a similar geasyh station with easy access to airport, Yamanote Line, and Shinkansen. I appreciate in advance any answers from your knowledgeable readers. Thank you very much.

Easy is relative, but I would not stay at Shinagawa unless catching a shinkansen - the place is quite uninteresting and sterile for me. Sounds like it is time for you to try Ueno, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukero, Akaharbara, Tokyo or one of the other Yamanote line stations. Ebisu, Osaki, Mejiro, Shinbashi or Meguro are places have used before as good alternatives. Other options are out of the central city, but that might not suit your travel style, even if the neighbourhoods offer a differnent experience.

Thank you for your quick answer. What about the first part of my question - when escalators will be replaced. Yes, ease of taking Shinkansen, familiarity, and size of the station make Shinagawa a preferred station for us. Wefve been staying there for nearly 20 years. Thank you, tho, JCT.

We always stay at Shinagawa, for all the reasons given: easy access to Yamanote Line and Shinkansen, and either Narita or Haneda airport trains. Having been there last week I agree, the Takanawa exit is a shambles at the moment, truly ghastly Depending on budget perhaps consider the Intercontinental Strings hotel at the opposite end of the station ie the Konan or East Exit. Easy access. It is expensive though. https://intercontinental-strings.jp

How long are the stairs you have to walk? If you exit on the east side, how long is the detour?

The renovation at Shinagawa Station must be tough with the escalators removed. Ifm not sure when theyfll be back, but you can check with station staff for updates. If youfre looking for an alternative, Tokyo Station or Shibuya Station might work well. Both have great connections to the airport, Yamanote Line, and Shinkansen. Hope this helps! Safe travels!
