Snow in Kyoto, Arashiyama, Nara in January?

Hi all, I am wondering if there is usually snow in Kyoto, Arashiyama and Nara in the second half of January? I would prefer if there wasn't as we have older people in the group, but if there is a lot of snow and the path is slippery, I wonder if we need to prepare anti-slip attachments for shoes, winterwear etc.
I have heard it seldom does snow in Kyoto itself, but will the ground be frosted over/slippery?
And also not sure if there will be snow at the shore area of Lake Biwa, and Amanoasahidate.
Thanks

No, there is usually no snow, but snow does fall occasionally. When the temperature dips below freezing - which happens - some surfaces can get icy, but usually winters are quite dry, and surfaces not usually wet. A large part of the "stage" of Kiyomizudera was once closed off on a winter morning when I visited, because it was too slippery.

Around Lake Biwa it is a bit more likely that there will be snow. But in Nara , Kyoto, Uji city quite unlikely. I did encounter icy raods in early January in Nara prefecture but that was deep in the mountains on small mountain roads.

I seldom enconter snow in Kyoto - occassionally in the areas in the north of the city by the hills. The time I got snowed on in the central city it did not settle on the ground. But, it does sometimes. What I would also add is that while there might not be snow on the ground or slippery, it can be bitterly cold with the wind blowing off the snow covered mountains.

It "snows" every year, but it usually melts as soon as it hits the ground. And while it's not like walking through snow or ice, some areas can still be a bit slippery, so if elderly, you should still take extra care.

Snow in Kyoto, Arashiyama, and Nara in late January is unlikely but possible, especially in the mornings when the ground might get frosty. To stay safe, anti-slip shoe attachments and warm winterwear are a smart idea. Snow is more likely around Lake Biwa and Amanohashidate, especially in the mountains, so it's best to prepare just in case.
