in Japan, as in Europe, supermarkets, if any, are in the boonies as there is not enough room in the town itself. Most, if not all, big department stores have a food floor, usually located in the basement. try the big"depato" in Osaka Kita and Minami like Daimaru, Hankyu, Takashimaya, Sogo etc.

There are supermarkets right in Central Tokyo.
I'm not an expert on Osaka, but for example in Tokyo, you can find markets and supermarkets in just about every major residential area of Tokyo, including all the major city wards of central tokyo, shinjuku, shibuya etc etc. There are some markets which specialize in importing foreign goods into Japan, ie the famed Azabu supermarket. You certainly don't need to travel out far to find a supermarket.

most likely Plantagenesta is thinking about North American style supermarkets that are huge and have enormous parkings or the European ones like Sainsbury or even Carrefour (with over 50 cash registers). the smallish supermarkets found in downtown Paris and other towns, without parking and with only a few cash registers etc. aren't real supermarkets, more like bigger convenience store. I agree with Plantagenesta that department stores in Japan have amazing food floors.come to think about it Harrods' food floor in London is mind boggling. Sogo in Osaka Shinsaibashi is really good.

Ella, can you give us a clue?
Are you looking for a big supermarket because you want to find a specific item? Or you've been there and you want to know its name?
Then, we can help you more...
