I am looking to bike around regional areas of Japan and take the trains for longer distances. Is it possible to take my bike with me if I was going to Kyoto from Tokyo?

To take bicycles onto trains, you need to remove the front wheel and put bicycle into a bag. You will also have to pay a small fee for bringing a bicycle onto a train. While I have seen several people bringing bicycles onto local trains (and actually have done it by myself, too), I have never seen people bringing bicycles onto shinkansen trains, and I am not sure whether it is even allowed. For your convenience, I recommend to send your bicycle from Kyoto to Tokyo by a delivery service. It will cost you around 1500 to 2500 Yen: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2278.html
