How do I upgrade to green car?

Hi
I am buying an ordinary JR rail pass for 14 days.
I want to upgrade to the green car for 1 journey: Tokyo to Kyoto return. This is because I am travelling over New Year and the trains will be full. I would like the extra space the green cars offer!
How do I upgrade to the green car for this journey ONLY? How much would it cost? Is it possible to upgrade with a JR rail pass?
