Should we buy JR train pass?

Hi, my sister and I are planning to go to Japan next summer, for about two weeks. We plan to first go to Tokyo, spend a couple of days there, and then later going to Nagoya and Kyoto. If time permits, we will also go to Nara. We are just wondering if it is a good purchase for us to buy the JR 7 day pass. I think we will return to the United States through Narita too, but might be from Osaka, I am not sure. Thanks in advance.

Basically: if you do a round trip Tokyo-Kyoto within 7 days, a 7-day Japan Rail Pass will pay off. Otherwise, single tickets are likely to come cheaper.
