Shimoda with no hotel reservation?

Heading to Shimoda for the beach this weekend, and I'm wondering if I'll have any luck finding a place to stay once I'm there. Good idea? Bad idea?

I know limited japanese so calling around for reservations is not much of an option.

I apppreciate any feedback you can give.

I think it is a bad idea. Shimoda is very popular on weekends, especially now during the summer holidays. I suspect that most hotels and ryokan will be booked out and recommend to try make advance reservations online or by phone.
