Oga no Namahage

Is Namahage festival in Oga Hanto held/performed in a theater or on the street on the New Year eve?

Namahage visit individual houses on the 31st and as they are mostly organized on a community base, it would not be easy to watch Namahage scaring children. I hear that City Hall officials wear Namahage costumes and show a performance near Oga station, though...

Do you know where to purchase the admission ticket to the show? It would be certainly interesting to be greeted by someone in that costume at the station! Thanks again!

. . . of Oga Peninsula from Akita City. It includes a visit to a farmhouse where a Namahage performance is held. And yes, it did cause the kids in the audience to cry!

The tour is in Japanese only with a chatty tour guide, but rest assured you can see a Namahage performance any day of the year.

The Oga Peninsula is tough to get around w/o rental car (particularly during winter), so the bus tour is highly recommended unless you've been to the area 2-3 times. My first trip to the area was by local bus and the 2nd by the tour. Still missed a few sites though.

Could you please provide with more details about the bus tour? Can we visit the peninsula by train from Akita to Oga town and from here take the local bus to explore Kanpu -zan and Nyudo-zaki? Understand the natives here speak a different dialect? Can you also recommend the local cuisine we should try in Oga? We intend to visit Hokuriku/Tohoku area next February .
