Kyoto In January. 2007/9/2 23:10
I am thinking of visitng Kyoto on the 2nd of January for the day. But i am concerned that the attractions will not be open as I am led to beleive that this day is a national holiday. Please advise.

Some attractions are closed due to the New Year holidays. But all temples and shrines will be open and crowded by people who make the year's first visit to the shrine or temple. It could be quite a nice experience to join them. More details are here:

Kyoto accommodation 2007/9/5 20:55
Will be in Kyoto in January too (10th-12th).

Want to stay at the Granvia Hotel. Thought I'd wait for last minute booking - hope to get a better deal. Is this recommended? or should I book now?

Book it now. The Granvia is a very popular hotel (the best in Kyoto, in my opinion,) and if you wait, you might not be able to book a room.
