Furano New Year festival 2007/9/4 15:37
In Furano on New Year's day (or probably New Year Eve), the residents set fire on some wooden structure that form a huge Kanji character 'BIG' on a hill. I think it's so big you can see from a good distance. I believe it comes with some traditional celebrations too.

Furano is easy from Sapporo (2 hour odd) but it will be deep in snow.
