i am going to be living in japan for a year and was wondering if any type of inoculations are needed?

If you are from any major developed country then no.

I'm from the US and never got any shots before going to Japan. I'm alive and kicking.

Make sure you had measles shots as a child- they do not routinely vaccinate children against measles here and there are periodic outbreaks resulting in schools being closed for a week or so.

Otherwise you should be fine.
