Help on Shirakawago & Gero

Hi all,

We are torn between overnight stay in Shirakawago or Gero!

We are going there around 18 Dec & wonder if it is possible to tour Shirakawago in a day? Will it become dark early like 3pm since it is winter?

Or should we stay overnight in Shirakawago? Do they have accomodations with private room (ie. 2 in a room)?

Or would it be better to just do a daytrip at Shirakawago, then go to Gero for overnight in hotspring ryokan?

Shirakawago is the more atmospheric town to overnight in! But Gero is better for hot springs.

Yes, just half a day is enough to see Ogimachi, the most interesting town in Shirakawago.

Sunset is not before 4pm.

Or should we stay overnight in Shirakawago?

Of course! To the opposite: there is probably no accommodation without private rooms.

It comes down to personal preference!

What about Takayama? It is the most interesting town in the region, in my personal opinion. It is located between Gero and Shirakawago.

We decided to try overnight at Shirakawago cos there is only 1 Shirakawago but many many onsen ryokans all over Japan :)

And because we have booked Hotel Associa Takayama Resort which also have indoors/outdoors onsen, we decided to give Gero a miss. ;p

Is it possible to go Kanazawa on my way back to Takayama from Shirakawago? Possible to see Kanazawa in a day? How long is the bus journey from Shirakawago to Kanazawa?

Day 1
Takayama to Shirakawago (overnight)

Day 2
Morning : Shirakawago to Kanazawa (what time is the earliest bus?)
Afternoon & Evening at Kanazawa
(to see geisha), (what time is the latest bus from Kanazawa to Takayama?)
